I used to spend hours trying to “save” photos in Lightroom—bumping up the exposure, fixing weird skin tones, adding masks to fake a soft glow. And I’ll be honest… I thought that’s just how photography worked.

Take the photo → fix it later.

But here’s the hard truth: editing can’t save a bad photo.
If the light is flat, the image feels dull, or the background is a distraction, no amount of presets or tweaks will make it feel magical.

The Most Common Thing I See Photographers Trying to Fix in Post

Over and over, I see photographers trying to rescue images that were shot in bad light. They’re too dark, too contrasty, or just feel… lifeless. They slap on a bright and airy preset, and instead of looking soft and glowy, it looks washed out and muddy.

Been there.

Here’s What Actually Makes the Difference (Before You Even Click the Shutter)

What transformed my work—and made editing easier and faster—wasn’t a better preset.

It was learning to:

  • Read the light (and avoid the bad stuff)
  • Find good light in any situation—even in tricky environments
  • Understand how backgrounds impact an image
  • Be intentional about what needs to happen in-camera to get the style I love

Once I mastered those skills, I didn’t need to “rescue” my photos anymore. They came out of camera feeling almost done. (And yes, the glow and color and skin tones looked 100x better too.)

Before and After: My Own Glow-Up

I’ll never forget looking at one of my early galleries and wondering why my images looked so different from the photographers I admired. Mine felt muddy, uneven, dark—even though I used the “right” preset.

Once I learned how to see light differently, everything clicked. My bright and airy style wasn’t just about editing. It was about how I shot.
