Let’s be honest—most of us are building our photography businesses while juggling everything else.
Kids. Clients. Dishes. Editing. Dinner.
It’s a lot. And if you’re waiting for things to “slow down” so you can finally go all in—newsflash: they won’t.
If you’ve ever said, “I’ll work on it when things calm down,” you already know:
Things don’t calm down.
So let’s stop waiting.
Here’s how to attack your goals in the middle of real life—one focused hour at a time.
Step 1: Dump the Idea Soup
You know that feeling when your brain is overloaded with everything you should be doing?
That’s idea soup. And it keeps you stuck.
Open a Google Doc or grab a notebook and just write down everything swirling around in your head:
- “Fix my pricing guide”
- “Write that blog I’ve been putting off”
- “Create a client welcome email”
- “Launch my fall minis”
- “Start emailing my list”
- “Plan content”
- “Actually post something”
Big, small, random—get it all out. It doesn’t need to be organized. This is just a brain dump.
You can’t focus if you don’t even know what’s on your plate.
Step 2: Pick the 3 Things That Will Move You Forward the Most
Now look at your list and circle the three tasks that would make the biggest difference right now.
These should not be the easiest or most fun.
They should be the things that:
- Generate income
- Simplify your workflow
- Get you in front of your dream clients
- Create momentum

Examples:
- “Set up fall mini sessions and open booking”
- “Batch and schedule 4 blog posts”
- “Create a repeatable inquiry workflow”
- “Build out my email welcome sequence”
If everything feels important, ask yourself:
What would I be most proud of finishing 30 days from now?
Choose those three.
Step 3: Break Each One Into Tiny, Doable Tasks
This is the step most people skip—then they wonder why nothing gets done.
“Launch my minis” sounds great, but when you sit down to work on it, you have no idea where to start.
Break each goal down into simple, brain-off steps. Like:
- Choose dates + times
- Upload promo images
- Add sessions to your booking platform
- Write the announcement email
- Create an Instagram post
- Schedule a reminder
- Add a countdown to stories
When you open your list, you shouldn’t need to think. You should just be able to do something.
Step 4: One Hour a Day. That’s It.
You don’t need a free day or a week off. You need one focused hour.
Block it. Protect it. Use it.
During that hour, you’re not scrolling for inspiration, redoing your logo, or “researching” what everyone else is doing.
You’re opening your task list and getting to work.
One task at a time. One hour a day. Done.

Step 5: Show Up Even When It’s Not Exciting
Let’s be honest—most of this isn’t glamorous.
It’s not fun. It’s not instant. And most of the time, no one is cheering you on.
But the people who stick to one hour a day—even when it’s quiet, boring, or slow—are the ones who actually build something that lasts.
Momentum comes from action, not motivation.
Final Thought
You don’t need to do it all.
You just need to know where you’re going—and take one small step every day to get there.
- Dump the idea soup
- Pick your top 3
- Break them down
- Focus for one hour
- Repeat
This is how you grow a real business while living a full, real life.
You’ve got this.
